Our commitment to sustainable tourism
Welcome to our eco-conscious, boutique hotel situated in a traditional country house on the south-facing side of the Pintueles Valley, Asturias. An adults-only rural retreat, where you can wake to views of the Sierra del Sueve and the Picos de Europa, appreciate organic home-cooked food and unwind in simple, contemporary spaces.
El gran sueño means "the big sleep", or ‘the big dream’. It is the realisation of so many years envisaging, planning and building our dream business and lifestyle. We have fulfilled our vision by creating a unique and special place that reflects our personalities and travel experiences as well as our commitment to the environment and local community. A tranquil space that delivers the intimacy of a traditional B&B while defying its boundaries by providing connectivity through high-speed WiFi and the contemporary elegance of a boutique hotel in the city.
A warm, friendly welcome awaits you at El gran sueño. In winter, the scent of mulled wine fills the house, while in summer we serve homemade elderflower cocktails in the garden. Javier is always on hand to share local recommendations and help plan your trip, while Dave’s lovingly created three-course evenings meals are not to be missed.
We embrace a ‘slow hotel’ philosophy, which for us means taking time to do things properly. Inspired by the ‘slow food’ and ‘slow travel’ movements, we try to make thoughtful, conscious decisions about everything we do – from selecting locally-sourced ingredients to our design choices – while at all times focusing on quality rather than quantity. Less is more in a ‘slow hotel’.
By paying attention to the details of design, comfort and quality food, we believe that we are not just making El gran sueño a comfortable place to stay, we are also helping our guests to make lasting memories. We know that it is often small moments – catching the mist rising through the valley, waking to the sound of birdsong or stepping out to explore the local byways of this unsung corner of Asturias – that will stay with you long after you return home.
Asturias is not quite what you’d expect when you think of Spain. It is a remarkably green region of densely wooded valleys, rugged limestone peaks and rich pasture land which tumbles down to a wild, undeveloped coast replete with deserted beaches and picturesque fishing towns. Famed throughout Spain for its superb seafood and comforting gastronomy, it is also known as the "país de los 40 quesos" or ‘land of 40 cheeses’, due to its abundance of artisan and cave-matured cheeses such as the regionally-protected cabrales and gamoneu (spicy blue matured in the Picos de Europa), casín and aguega-l pitu.
