5 beaches near el gran sueño that we love

There are over 200 beaches to choose from in Asturias. How do you know which ones are the best? We chose these because they are both local to us and beautiful.

Carson on the beach

Playa de Rodiles (Villaviciosa) - 40 minutes

Rodiles Beach is a beautiful beach to go for a walk and admire the view. It is over a kilometre in length and has a lovely boarded walk to take a stroll on. Beneath the shade of eucalyptus trees there is a large picnic area. It is a great beach to spend the entire day. Rodiles is a popular retreat with residents of urban Asturias, so we avoid it in the busiest months of August and July; however, sunny days in spring, autumn or even winter are an excellent time of the year to enjoy it, often to yourself.

Playa de la Griega (Colunga) - 40 minutes

La Griega Beach is a great place to take a long walk. It is Carson´s favourite. The beach is beautifully natural and famous for its fossilised dinosaur footprints, an impressive site. There is a great walk that takes you through the woods to La Isla. Finish the circular walk with a 2km stretch along the AS-257. If you do not fancy taking the walk along the road, you can catch a taxi for about €6.

Arenal de Morís (Caravia) - 50 minutes

Morís Sands is a lovely bay with fine, white sand. There is a small bar and restaurant so it is a good choice if you wish to spend the day on the beach. For this reason, it does attract the tourists; however, pick those days in July or September and enjoy the place free from the crowds. Picnic tables offer an alternative to the restaurant. It is good for swimming too as there are lifeguards in season.

Playa de Vega (Ribadesella) - 50 minutes

Vega is a a truly spectacular wild beach with fine, toasted sand, where rolling green hills meet the shoreline in perfect tranquillity. Access is a little tricky, but this is the beauty as it keeps the crowds out. Take your own refreshments if you are spending the day there. At the Berbes end, there is a nudist area. At the opposite end, there is Güeyu Mar, a popular fish restaurant.

Playa de Ballota (Llanes) - 1 hour

Ballota Beach is our favourite. Again, the access is a little tricky, but well worth the effort. There is a great viewpoint above the beach that offers spectacular coastal views. The beach is small, but perfectly formed, a great place to spend the day. In high season there is a small beach bar which does attract the tourists, get there early head to the far end and enjoy this special place. At the far west end of the beach, there is a nudist area.
